Challenge
Online hate and antisemitism are often disguised as entertainment and viral content, reaching and influencing countless young people.
Solution
Let young people engage with the content they encounter online daily, and practice recognizing and reflecting on antisemitic material.
Education on online antisemitism, exactly as young people encounter it daily in their feeds.
A complex topic
How do you make a complex topic like antisemitism accessible to young people? What actually *is* antisemitism, and how do you spot it when it appears on your feed between influencers and funny memes? Antisemitism is sometimes subtle, which makes it all the more dangerous. That is why Shout Out! is a game that shows antisemitism exactly as young people encounter it: on a (fictional) social media network, mixed in with all kinds of crazy memes, with tons of followers and likes.
A game with a strong story
To translate the insights from the Social Media Literacy against Antisemitism research project into an accessible game, we created an engaging story that immerses players in a fictional world. They take a stand against online antisemitism and hate speech by recognizing and neutralizing harmful posts. Every new level introduces new techniques and gives the player fresh tools to stop them.
In education
We created the game on behalf of the University of Duisburg-Essen as part of a larger lesson package. For schools, we developed a special classroom version where students play together in a shared virtual space. After playing, the smartboard shows which topics this specific class found most challenging or where opinions differed the most. This way, we facilitate the classroom discussion and give teachers the tools they need to debrief the material.
Serious doesn’t mean boring
We’re very proud of Shout Out! The game shows that even a heavy social issue like antisemitism can be perfectly paired with an exciting, accessible game. In fact, it is a great way to approach the subject! Because you don’t develop media literacy just by thinking about it, but by engaging and practicing your skills.
The game’s illustrations were created by Iris van Hassel.
